1-2-3 Magic Teen

Mental Health Substance Use Prevention or Treatment In-home Parent Skill-Based Does Not Currently Meet Criteria

1-2-3 Magic Teen is a parenting program designed for parents and caregivers of adolescents ages 13–19. The 1-2-3 Magic Teen program aims to teach parents and caregivers to effectively communicate and to set boundaries with their teens while reducing arguing and yelling.

Group leaders deliver 1-2-3 Magic Teen to groups of parents and caregivers, focusing on four essential strategies: (1) Don’t Take it Personally, (2) Manage and Let Go, (3) Stay in Touch, and (4) Take Care of Yourself.

Group leaders deliver parenting techniques and skills associated with each essential strategy. For Don’t Take it Personally, group leaders intend to help parents learn how to regulate their own emotions and reactions to teens’ typical behavior. Group leaders provide techniques to increase parents’ understanding of why teens might “snub” them or come off as rude or avoidant when parents try to engage. They also ask parents to remember their own adolescence and encourage them to adjust thought patterns and reactions to be more realistic about teens’ behavior. For Manage and Let Go, group leaders work with parents to create reasonable boundaries, allow for teen independence, and talk less to communicate without lecturing or arguing. Group leaders offer techniques that include maintaining minimal, clearly understood house rules that can change as teens get older and more competent. Group leaders also suggest ideas to prevent and manage problems with driving, drug or alcohol use, sex and romance, and technology. For Stay in Touch, group leaders seek to support parents to build and strengthen connections with their teens. Parents practice relationship-building skills, including sympathetic listening and creating fun one-on-one moments that foster warmth and connection. Finally, for Take Care of Yourself, group leaders encourage parents to take time for themselves and mitigate unrelated sources of stress. Parents assess their own mental wellbeing, marriage or relationship, job satisfaction, and physical health. Group leaders offer parents techniques to avoid transferring negative feelings onto their teens, take accountability for personal distress, and refrain from exaggerating the seriousness of their teen’s problems.
